Shopping at Playa Del Carmen’s Quinta Alegria Shopping Plaza

5th Avenue

You can also catch the ferry to the nearby island of Cozumel. The bus terminal is also located at Playa Del Carmen, on the 5th avenue.

5th Ave day or night is where the action, it is the main area of tourist activity. It’s about a three minute walk from our resort, which is very convenient.  The over mile long stretch of 5th Ave can be very crowded at times. You’ll find bars, restaurants, shops, tattoo parlors, nightclubs, gift shops, and ADO Bus Station. The street is very lively as you may come across street perfromers at times.

You can also catch the ferry to the nearby island of Cozumel. The bus terminal is also located at Playa Del Carmen, on the 5 th avenue.

Many folks just wander the avenue, shopping, eating, looking, seeing ...

Mayan Ruins of Tulum

The Mayan ruins of Tulum, only an hour from Playa del Carmen, undoubtedly has one of the most breathtaking settings of any city past or present. The only significant large scale Mayan ruin on the coast, it is perched on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

Xcaret

Within several dozen kilometres of Playa Del Carmen are a multitude of different "ecological" and nature parks. Some are more environmentally friendly, some have more activities, some are quiet and peaceful.

XCaret is like a Mexican Disneyland. There are lots of shows, animals, displays, and activities here. Among our favorites are reef snorkeling, the sea turtle breeding program, the horse riding demonstrations, the underground centote river, the butterfly pavilion, the Mayan ruins, the bat cave, the Mayan town recreation, the jaguars, the manatees, and the big show they have at the end of the night. There are lots of restaurants here and they're quite good. Yes, they have "Swimming with Dolphins" if you're interested in that.

Xel-Ha

Xel-Ha is the major competitor to XCaret but focuses a little more on "water activities". They also have snorkeling, cenotes, caves, birds, iguanas, swim with dolphins, and Mayan ruins on their site. There's a children's playground and massage spa.

Aktun Chen

Wear a helmet and explore a breathtaking underground cave and river system! Aktun Chen also has animals--monkeys, birds, snakes, and several other exotic species. This park only takes about 2 hours to tour so it's great for a half-day excursion.

Yal-Ku

A fantastic lagoon for snorkeling. The park has lots of beautiful statues and if you're lucky you'll see the sea turtles swimming near the outlet to the ocean.

The Royal at Playa del Carmen offers many night activities as well as a nightly live show at the Lobby bar.

In addition, there are many other night venues offered all around Playa del Carmen.  Here is a list of a few.

Blue Parrot, the dance club on the beach for those wanting to get down until early hours.

Fusion, offers a variety of live music some nights and a nightly fire show starts on the beach here around 10pm before moving in to Blue Parrot.

El Diablito Cha Cha Cha, bar/lounge/restaurant located in the "party zone" on the way to Blue Parrot.

Coco Bongo, corner of Calle 12 and 10th Ave, features acrobatics, impersonators and a party that lasts until the early hours of the morning. $60 cover charge includes full bar, many discounts can be found through hotels of representatives around town.

Coco Maya is located on the beach between Calles 12 and 14, features DJ or live music most evenings until 3 am.  No cover charge.

Santanera on Calle 12, between Fifth and Tenth Avenues, is an extremely cool bar/club featuring DJ music.  This is the club for the young and beautiful or those who want to be.  Cover charge.

Luna Blue Garden Bar,  Calle 26 Norte, between 5th Ave & 10th Ave,  attracts locals and visitors to the swings surrounding the bar in a dry rock cenote.  Jorge, the resident bartender, serves up creative concoctions like the Sarita b. Careful and other potent adult beverages.

Heading south on Fifth Avenue, you’ll find the Deseo rooftop bar between Calles 12 and 10.  Ultramodern and hip, it features a totally alfresco bar.  In addition to chairs, they offer double beds for lounging with friends, many with flowing white linen curtains.  You can also take a dip in the rooftop pool, all the while watching 20’s and 30’s silent movies projected onto the adjacent wall.
